| To
obtain welfare benefits you must fit certain requirement including:
being below a certain income(which gets larger the more members of your
family there are), the amount of members in your household (including
the amount of children), and whether there are any disabilities in the
household. In order to receive any welfare assistance, it is necessary to have a social security number for all members who you wish to be considered for benefits (including children). If there is a member of your household who needs a social security number you may apply for one, and then you can begin applying for welfare benefits before the social security number is issued. You must provide proof of application for a social security number at the time of applying for welfare benefits. There is a work aspect to receiving welfare assistance and most applicants must be either seeking work or training for a future profession. This may be waved depending on responsibilities of the welfare recipient, such as if you are taking care of young childen or you or your family members have medical conditions. Disabled recipients, as well as those enrolled in substance abuse programs, may also be excused from work requirements. If you are enrolled in college it is possible to be exempt from the work requirement. Finally, there are special requirements for divorced or seperated parents, their dependent children, and those who are receiving child support. Recipients will be asked to seek child support and cooperate with welfare’s child support and paternity requirements. Once child support is granted, the child support payments may be fully or partially diverted to the welfare office since they will be giving you welfare payments. Under certain conditions, exemptions may be made for good causes, such as if proof can be shown that one was subject to domestic violence.
